Q&As

Flooring Types & Manufacturers

Which sports flooring surface is best for my facility?

Wood: Best for competition gyms and high-performance spaces. Maple offers great resilience, ball rebound, a classic look, and long-term durability. Plan for regular dust-mopping, annual professional recoating, and a full sand/refinish every 7–12 years (condition-dependent).

Synthetic: Best for multi-use spaces (assemblies, cafeteria, events). Padded polyurethane is cushioned, seamless, easy to clean, and versatile.

Rubber: Best for weight rooms and high-impact areas; excellent shock absorption and slip resistance.

Rule of thumb: Wood for sports performance; synthetic for multipurpose; rubber for weight/high-impact.

Which manufacturers does Classic represent?
We carry Robbins Sport Surfaces (wood systems), Robbins Pulastic (padded polyurethane), and Robbins Galaxy (sheet rubber/tile). Robbins and Pulastic are globally recognized for innovation and athlete safety.
Is Classic MFMA certified as an installer, and do you sell MFMA-approved products?
Yes. Classic Sport Floors is an MFMA-certified installer, and Robbins is an MFMA member mill. Products meet MFMA standards for safety, durability, and performance.
How much does a new gym floor cost?
It depends on area (sq. ft.), new build vs. retrofit, floor/substrate type, design features, location, and schedule. Most projects range $19–$28 per sq. ft. See our Pricing page or contact us for a tailored quote.
Can I combine flooring types in one facility?
Yes. Many facilities use wood for the main gym and synthetic or rubber in auxiliary spaces and weight rooms. We also install hybrids (e.g., a Robbins wood court surrounded by a Pulastic walking track).

Installation & Renovation

Can you install a new floor, or refinish/renovate/repair my existing floor?
Yes — we handle new installations, sanding, recoating, repairs, and full refinishing.
How long does a typical installation take?

Full hardwood gym: ~4–6 weeks for 5,000–10,000 sq. ft., including sanding, sealing, game lines/logos, finish coats, and curing.

Full sand & refinish: ~2–3 weeks (size/scope dependent).

Screen & recoat: ~1–2 days (conditions and coat count dependent).

After you apply the final coat of finish, how long do I have to wait until I can use the floor?
It may look and feel dry after 24 hours, but we recommend waiting 72 hours after the final coat before resuming any traffic or sports activities.
Can you work around my school and team’s busy schedules?
Yes. We frequently schedule during summer breaks or off-seasons and coordinate with facility managers to minimize downtime.
Do you remove old flooring?
Yes. We remove existing surfaces, handle disposal, and prep the subfloor. Removal is often included in replacement quotes.
Can you add custom logos and game lines?
Absolutely. We specialize in mascots, branding, and multi-sport game line layouts.
Can you repair just part of a damaged floor, or does the whole surface need replacing?
Often we can repair/replace only damaged sections. Full replacement is needed only when damage is widespread or the floor has reached end of life.

Maintenance & Care

How should I maintain a wood gym floor?

Daily: Dust mop with a neutral, MFMA-approved cleaner.

Annually: Screen & recoat high-use floors.

Important: Avoid wet mopping, harsh chemicals, or tape (it can pull finish).

How does moisture and humidity affect flooring?
Wood is hygroscopic and expands/contracts with moisture changes. Proper HVAC management controls seasonal movement.
Can my custodial staff maintain the floor?
Yes — with proper training and approved products, staff can safely maintain floors between our service visits.
How do I know if my floor needs refinishing?
If finish looks worn/dull or traction is reduced, it’s time to recoat. We can advise whether a full sand & refinish is necessary.

Quotes & Site Visits

Do you offer quotes or site visits?
Yes. We measure, inspect subfloors, review logos/game lines, and provide detailed quotes.
How soon can I get a quote?
Most quotes are delivered within a few business days. Recoat quotes can often be provided within 24–48 hours of a site visit.
Do you service more than schools and gyms?
Yes — we also work with universities/colleges, recreation centers, fitness clubs and training facilities, dance studios, churches and community centers, YMCAs and municipal facilities, military bases, and private residential courts.
Where do you provide service?
New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and parts of New York. We also travel for larger projects.
What information do you need to send me a quote?
Square footage; facility type; surface preference; special requests (logos, colors, multi-sport lines); photos of the existing floor (if available); and desired timeline/deadlines. Send details via our Contact form for the quickest turnaround.
